Introduction

The Israel-Palestine conflict is not just a political issue—it is a humanitarian crisis that has continued for decades. As Muslims, it is important for us to understand the truth, support justice, and reflect on what our faith teaches about standing up against oppression. This post sheds light on the historical and present-day reality of Palestine, and clarifies the concept of Jihad in Islam, which is often misunderstood.

The History of the Palestine Conflict

The land of Palestine has deep historical, religious, and cultural significance for Muslims, Christians, and Jews. In 1948, after decades of Zionist migration and British colonial control, the state of Israel was declared. This led to the Nakba (catastrophe), where more than 700,000 Palestinians were displaced, and hundreds of villages were destroyed.

In 1967, Israel occupied the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza. Since then, Palestinians have lived under military occupation, facing home demolitions, checkpoints, land confiscation, and violence. Gaza has been under a severe blockade for over 15 years, creating a humanitarian disaster.

Injustice and Apartheid

Many international human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have declared that Israel’s policies toward Palestinians amount to apartheid. This includes unequal laws, systemic discrimination, and denial of basic human rights.

  • Military raids and arrests (including children)
  • Illegal settlements built on Palestinian land
  • Restrictions on worship at Al-Aqsa Mosque
  • Denial of the right to return for refugees

What Islam Teaches About Injustice

Islam teaches us to stand firmly for justice:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كُونُوا قَوَّامِينَ بِالْقِسْطِ شُهَدَاءَ لِلَّهِ
"O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah..."
Surah An-Nisa (4:135)

Muslims around the world feel a deep connection to Palestine—not only because of Masjid Al-Aqsa, but because Islam teaches us to support the oppressed (mazlumeen).

Understanding Jihad: The Struggle for Justice

The word Jihad is often misunderstood. In Islam, Jihad means struggle or effort in the path of Allah, and it includes several important forms:

  • Jihad al-Nafs – Struggle against the self and ego.
  • Jihad bil-Qalam – Struggle through education and spreading truth.
  • Jihad bil-Mal – Struggle by donating and supporting good causes.
  • Jihad bis-Saif – Physical struggle (only for defense, under Islamic rules).
"We have returned from the lesser jihad to the greater jihad."
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), referring to the spiritual struggle as greater.

True Jihad is not terrorism or hatred—it is rooted in discipline, ethics, and compassion.

How Can We Help Palestine Today?

  • Make sincere du'a for the oppressed.
  • Speak out on social media, blogs, and among friends.
  • Support trusted organizations providing aid in Gaza and the West Bank.
  • Educate yourself and others with verified sources.
  • Boycott companies that support injustice (BDS movement).
  • Live by Islamic values of mercy, justice, and peace.

Conclusion

Palestine is not just a political issue—it is a test of our faith, our compassion, and our sense of justice. As Muslims, we must remember that Jihad is not about violence, but about truth, mercy, and standing up for the oppressed in every way we can.

May Allah grant victory to the oppressed, guide the oppressors to justice, and make us among those who speak truth with wisdom.
